Umami-infused Tofu Skewers for Your Summer Cookouts

Few ingredients are as versatile as tofu. Prepare for a culinary adventure where umami meets fire, as these grilled tofu skewers set your taste buds ablaze. Each sizzling turn on the grill pushes these cubes toward perfection, gradually developing a toasty brown hue and an irresistible char. Plated with a generous drizzle of either Umami Everyday or Umami Reserve Hot Sauce, these grilled umami tofu skewers deliver a fiery flavor extravaganza. These smoky cubes make for great leftovers, too. Try adding them to a breakfast scramble or noodles the next day!


What you need:

  • 1 block extra firm tofu (16oz), cut into 1in cubes
  • 1/2 medium red onion, sliced into ~1in chunks
  • Avocado oil (for greasing grill)


  • 5 Tbsp Umami Everyday Sauce (Umami Reserve for a spicy version)
  • ¾ cup tamari or soy sauce
  • 3 Tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • 2 tsp fresh chopped ginger
  • ¾ cup lighter beer (lager, ale, kolsch)
  • Fresh ground pepper

Optional for garnish

  • Sesame seeds
  • Sliced green onion


    1. In a wide, shallow dish, combine ingredients for the marinade and stir together. 
    2. Add the cubed tofu to the dish with the marinade. Arrange the cubes so that they are all mostly coated in the marinade. Let sit at room temp for about half an hour.
    3. Heat the grill to medium-high heat. Stack the tofu cubes and onion chunks in an alternating pattern. Brush the hot grill with avocado oil and place the assembled skewers. Turn every 3-4 minutes until they are all a toasty brown and beginning to char, about 15 minutes. 
    4. Plate the tofu, drizzle with extra Umami Everyday or Umami Reserve Hot Sauce. Garnish how you like, and serve!
